Responding instead of reacting

A pause can change the next step, even when it cannot change the situation.

Notice the pull

An argument, a notification, or someone else’s urgency can pull your attention into a reaction. Noticing that pull is useful. You can acknowledge what is happening before deciding what to do.

Ask a smaller question

Instead of trying to resolve everything immediately, ask: what needs a response from me right now? Sometimes it is a clear answer. Sometimes it is a boundary. Sometimes it is a little time.

Reflect without keeping score

Later, consider what helped you respond deliberately. You will not catch every reaction. A useful practice is one you can return to, without turning it into another test of your worth.
